Even from a young age it seemed imminent that Matt Holub was destined to ride some kind of musical tour bus. It started with piano lessons at age 6 and almost stopped completely at age 9. What's a boy to do? Play outside with his friends or practice the piano inside? And despite the fact that his sister, Rachel, could play any one of the plethera of musical instruments within his grasp, Matt didn't touch any of them for 9 years. But things change.
At 18 years of age, in the prime of his life, Matthew revisited the piano in college and was hooked. A year later, drummer Matt Frost began showing him some guitar and so it began. Holub emmersed his college years into music, be it Concert Choir or late night acoustic sessions at Richard St. parties. Everything was coming naturally and eventually, after several band auditions, he found his home in Sauerwine. He started as just a backup singer but his talents could not be contained. His piano and keyboard abilities brought a new sound to the band and he soon found himself playing guitar, writing songs, and finally taking the helm as lead singer.
But it wasn't until after college that Holub's songwriting came into its own right of originality. With a wide array of influences like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, Joe Walsh, Ani Difranco, and of course, Dave Matthews, his music broke the traditional pop mold that everyone drooled over. Matt began a revolution of musical composition by mixing funky rhythmic acoustic guitar work with jazz chords and the rest, shall we say, is history.
In the mind of a somewhat obsessive compulsive songwriter he lives life as full as possible. He's been quoted as saying, "I work too much, vacation not nearly enough, sleep only when I need too, and play as much as life will allow."
